When we lose someone we may think we know what we have lost. It might seem obvious. Maybe we lost a partner or spouse, a parent or child. Or maybe we lost our job or home. That seems simple enough to understand. However, we actually lose much more than the person or object we cherish. We also lose a part of our self that we knew only in relationship to that person.

There are many aspects of loss. When we lose someone who is really important to us, any number of those aspects may arise. Knowing what those aspects of loss are, and that they are absolutely normal and predictable, can help us find the space in our heart that allows that loss to do its healing work in us.
