Calming the busy mind and the troubled heart

leading to a more fulfilling life.

Since 1993, I have taught Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in clinical settings for patients and healthcare professionals in major medical centers in Northern California and in the Midwest. In recent years I have also taught Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy intensives for mental health professionals.

I currently have a private practice in Sonoma County, California and provide staff support for community hospice programs and for women with breast cancer, as well as end-of-life triage for individuals with complex psychological and spiritual needs that exceed the scope of hospice services.

The principle focus of my private practice work is devoted to meeting the needs of individuals coping with issues of separation, loss, and the integration of loss in daily life. For more information, click the link here for “Counseling Services.”

Patrick Thornton

Since 1963, I have dedicated my life work to guiding and counseling individuals facing issues of life crisis ranging from separation, loss, illness, depression, and trauma to end of life decision making.

I have been assisting individual with complex issues at end-of-life for over 30 years. During that time I have, among other things, served as Executive Director for two community based hospice programs, provided Chaplaincy and Bereavement services for two other hospice programs, served as Clinical Director for the Cancer Support Community of San Francisco, as a consultant and Director of Affiliate Programs for Planetree, and for 8 years, served on Medical Ethics Boards. I have an advance degree with a dual concentration in Thanatology and Religious Studies, and have a particular interest in the intersection between Western Psychology, Judaism, Buddhism, and Christianity.

I served as a Cleric in pastoral work from 1963 thru 1975, and  have studied and practiced Vipassana (Insight) Meditation since 1981, mentoring with Sylvia Boorstein, one of the founding teachers with Spirit Rock Mediation Center in Woodacre, California for 8 years. In 1992, I received ordination and was given the Dhamma name of Chan Bî Hân or True Compassionate Practice (lit, To Suffer Compassion), from Zen Master and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh at Plum Village, Meriac-Labou, France.  With a passionate understanding and a holistic interfaith perspective, I bring a fresh and unique approach to the emotional and spiritual dimensions that serve to integrate heart, mind and body,
